Strengthen & Protect LGBTQIA+ Rights
Strengthen & Protect LGBTQIA+ Rights
All around us, we are bearing witness to violent assaults on queer and trans communities. From efforts to criminalize gender-affirming care to attacks on same-sex marriage. It is also undeniable that queer and trans communities are disproportionately impacted by our country's growing affordability crisis.
If elected, I would champion federal legislation that protects LGBTQIA+ communities from discrimination in housing, employment, healthcare, education, and public accommodations.
This includes:
1) Supporting and fighting to pass the Equality Act
2) Tackling the rising homelessness crisis that many LGBTQIA+ youth face in Chicago and beyond
3) Enshrining gender-affirming healthcare as a protected right.
Further, I would make it a priority to elevate the expertise and leadership of LGBTQIA+ justice organizations and Black and brown queer and trans leaders fighting to tackle the disproportionate violence and discrimination queer and trans people of color face in our society. This includes using my federal office to push for increased federal funding to support direct service programs and resources across our city that advocate for and advance the rights of LGBTQIA+communities.
If elected, I would also exercise any and all oversight authority to hold federal agencies that fail to protect LGBTQIA+ people accountable, including investigating discriminatory practices and pushing back against extremist attempts to criminalize queer and trans lives.
