“With working families in Chicago struggling to pay for rent, gas, and groceries, allowing individual stock trading by Members of Congress is not only morally corrupt but also an abuse of power.”

CHICAGO — Today, IL-07 Congressional Candidate, Anabel Mendoza, is calling on retiring Rep. Danny Davis (IL-07) to sign on to a bipartisan discharge petition to ban individual stock trading by Members of Congress. The discharge petition, which currently has three signatures from Members of the Illinois Delegation, would bring to the floor a vote on a bill to prohibit Members of Congress and their spouses and dependent children from trading or owning stock, and for other purposes. Anabel Mendoza released the following statement:

“Elected officials shouldn’t be getting rich off of insider information. We elect  Members of Congress to Washington to represent the interests of their constituents, not to line their own pockets or their stock portfolio. While prices continue to skyrocket — with working families in Chicago struggling to pay for rent, gas, and groceries — allowing individual stock trading by Members of Congress is not only morally corrupt but also an abuse of power.

“I’m calling on Rep. Davis to join members of the Illinois delegation and sign on to the discharge petition to ban individual stock trading by Members of Congress and their families. Voters deserve transparency and to know that  when their representatives vote on legislation, they’re doing it for the public good — not their own financial gain. In Congress, I will do everything to weed out corruption and end a rigged system that rewards people who break the rules.”
