Anabel Mendoza Calls On Melissa Conyears-Ervin To Resign And Withdraw from Race

CHICAGO — Ahead of tonight’s first candidate debate, IL-07 Congressional candidate Anabel Mendoza is calling on City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin to resign from her post and withdraw her campaign for Congress following an ethics complaint that she misused her official government office to advance her political campaign for Congress:

“The concerns raised in the eight-page ethics complaint that Melissa Conyears-Ervin tried to use her official office to exploit the Trump administration and ICE’s federal overreach for her own political gain are deeply troubling. This puts into question Melissa’s ability to put the people of Chicago ahead of herself. Melissa already paid $30,000 in ethical fines for using taxpayer resources for personal and political gain. This is part of a broader pattern Melissa has demonstrated, from retaliating against whistleblowers and aligning herself with AIPAC and special interests over the communities she is supposed to represent. All of this points to the same problem: public power being used for personal ambition.

“When someone repeatedly crosses that line and sells out their values, they’ve shown us exactly who they are. That’s why Melissa Conyears-Ervin should resign immediately as Chicago City Treasurer and withdraw from the IL-07 race. Leadership requires integrity, which she clearly lacks.”

Additional Background:

  • As City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin was forced to pay $30,000 in ethical fines after it was found that she “misused taxpayer resources for personal and political purposes and improperly fired whistleblowers.”
